Toledo Central Cath 17, Trotwood Madison 14

The Trotwood-Madison Rams fell short of a return to trip to the state championship, losing 17-14 on Friday versus the Toledo Central Catholic Fighting Irish in the OHSAA Division III state semi-final matchup at Donnell Stadium in Findlay.

Trotwood-Madison (12-2) had its streak of four straight title game appearances snapped. The Rams fell behind 10-0 at the half before a late surge saw them get within three points.

These two teams last met two years ago in the Division II state title game. The Fighting Irish walked away winners in that contest also.

Toledo Central Catholic (13-1) put points on the board on their first possession of the game, capping off the TD drive with a 15-yard play-action pass from quarterback Marcus Winters to Lucas Beauch less than five minutes into the contest.

They added three more points in the final minutes of the first half with a 22-yard field goal by kicker Brock Quinlan as the Fighting Irish took a 10-0 lead into the locker room.

The Rams got off the snide when freshman running back Raveion Hargrove rushed for a 25-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter to pull within three points.

Toledo Central Catholic answered the touchdown seconds later as Winters scored from 90 yards out on a quarterback keeper.

Breland Copsy would again pull Trotwood-Madison within a field goal when he rushed for a touchdown from three yards out. The Rams had two cracks at taking the lead in the fourth quarter, but the Fighting Irish got a couple of stops and sealed their second trip to the championship game in three years.

Quarterback Messiah DeWeaver was just 6-of-21 passing for 36 yards in the defeat.

Toledo Central Catholic heads to Columbus next Thursday to face Athens in the OHSAA Division III state championship game at Ohio Stadium.
